Promotie: kan een infectie helpen bij botbreuken?

Een infectie wordt meestal gezien als iets slechts dat behandeld moet worden. Echter, artsen in het UMC Utrecht zagen dat een bacteriële infectie bij een botbreuk ook tot iets goeds leidde. Het lichaam reageerde, en er was sprake van botgroei. Zo kwamen zij tot de vraag: hoe kunnen we een infectie inzetten om beschadigd bot te herstellen?

Feb 29: One Health project to predict antimicrobial resistance in low-income setting awarded with ZonMw grant

Together with international partners from high- and low-resource settings, epidemiologist Esther van Kleef PhD (Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, UMC Utrecht and Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp) has received a ZonMw grant of € 200.000 to develop a low-cost surveillance approach to monitor antimicrobial resistance (AMR) outside the hospital setting in sub-Saharan Africa and predict AMR in clinical infections. This project is pioneering the use of metagenomics, which examines DNA from bacteria in pooled fecal samples to predict which antibiotics are still effective against serious infections.

Advies Gezondheidsraad vaccinatie tegen RS-virus goed nieuws

UMC Utrecht en het Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis vinden het goed nieuws voor baby’s en hun ouders dat de Gezondheidsraad adviseert om een vaccinatie tegen het RS-virus voor zuigelingen op te nemen in het Rijksvaccinatieprogramma. Deze vaccinatie beschermt zuigelingen tijdens hun eerste kwetsbare maanden tegen het RS-virus en het levert ook brede maatschappelijke voordelen op. Het aantal ziekenhuisopnames als gevolg van het RS-virus kan met 80 procent dalen, zo blijkt uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Reduced mortality for sickest COVID-19 patients

Treating critically ill COVID-19 patients with drugs typically used for arthritis may significantly improve survival, a landmark study has found. The findings, which have not yet been peer-reviewed, come from the REMAP-CAP trial, which evaluates the effect of treatments on a combination of survival and length of time patients need support in an intensive care unit (ICU).

Crowdfunding has started at UMC Utrecht for a study to provide more insight into the immune system of patients with COVID-19. This allows doctors to better predict the severity of the infection and the disease course per individual patient. On the basis of this, they can also treat patients with the best available medicine, aimed at preventing further damage.

As soon as steps are taken to slowly come out of the corona lockdown, it is important to be able to predict the effects of those steps. UMC Utrecht professor of epidemiology Mirjam Kretzschmar and her group have developed a calculation model that can help with this.
