Your visit to UMC Utrecht uitklapper, klik om te openen

Will my appointment take place?

Because we also take care of patients with the coronavirus, unfortunately not all scheduled appointments and treatments can take place in the way that you are used to. Emergency care and treatments that cannot be delayed will continue.

Your treating physician will determine what is appropriate for your situation. Where possible, your hospital appointment will be postponed or replaced by a telephone consultation, a video consultation or an e-consultation. You will receive a personal message about this. Has your appointment been postponed and are you worried? Do not hesitate to contact the doctor or your attending physician.

Note! Do you have flu-like symptoms?

Before visiting UMC Utrecht, we reach out to all patients to ask if they have fly-like symptoms. When the doctor wants to see you, we ask you to come to the cohort polyclinic. You will then receive a personal message about this.

Can I safely visit UMC Utrecht?

In the hospital we have taken measures to ensure that the environment is as safe as possible for patients, visitors and employees. We do this by, among other things, separate care and treatment of infected patients, through online or telephone contact between patient and care provider if this is possible and by limiting the visiting options. In addition, many employees and patients are tested for contamination and we emphasize the hygiene rules. In this way we limit the risk of the coronavirus spreading.

Should I bring/wear a face mask?

We ask everyone aged 13 and older to bring their own non-medical mouth mask to the hospital and to wear it in public areas, such as the hall and waiting areas. Did you not bring your own face mask? Then in you'll get a 'non-medical' face mask at the entrance of our hospital.

You do not have to wear a mask if you have been admitted to our hospital.

I have been on vacation abroad, in an area where code orange/red applies and I have an appointment in the hospital within 14 days. What should I do?

After returning from a country with code orange or code red, you need to be home-isolated for 14 days. Do you have an appointment in the hospital within those 14 days? Please contact the outpatient clinic.

When will I as a patient receive a vaccination?

You are in the risk group if you have a reduced resistance or if you receive an annual call for the flu vaccination. You will then receive a call for vaccination according to the national order.

Is the vaccination safe for me as a patient (with reduced resistance)?

The vaccination is also safe for peopel with reduced resistance. You do not need to consult your healthcare professional before you receive the vaccination.

Will the vaccination work for me as a patient?

The vaccination may not work as well because of the underlying disease or treatment. But that does not mean that the vaccination will be delayed. The chance of a coronavirus infection is high at the moment. In addition, corona contamination can be more serious in patients with reduced resistance. The risk of possible side effects of the vaccination also does not outweigh the risk of infection with coronavirus.

I've had a vaccination. Do I still have to comply with the measures?

Have you had a vaccination? Then it is important that you still follow all measures taken by the national government, such as keeping a distance of 1.5 meters and wearing a mouth mask. We do not know how well the vaccination works yet.

Do housemates of patients with reduced resistance get priority over a vaccination?

Housemates of patients with reduced resistance are currently not given priority vaccination.

Cohort polyclinic uitklapper, klik om te openen

The cohort polyclinic is an isolated area within our outpatient clinic. Here we receive patients that are (possibly) infected with the  coronavirus. By acting as such we can prevent contamination to our other (often more vulnerable) patients. When you come to our hospital with fly-like symptoms, your appointment will take place at the cohort polyclinic.

Patients with coronavirus (testing of) uitklapper, klik om te openen

Why do you test patients for coronavirus?

The faster we can detect the virus in a patient, the better we can prevent spread. Therefore patients with flu-like symptoms are preventively tested on a big amount of viruses. And now also as a precaution on the coronavirus.

How is the test being taken?

Mucus is taken  from the nose and throat with a cotton swab. Based on that, it can be determined whether the patient is infected with the new coronavirus.

Which patients do you test for coronavirus?

If patients with flu-like symptoms are being referred to the UMC Utrecht, they will be tested for coronavirus.

What happens with patients who have coronavirus?

If hospitalization is not necessary, then the patient will go home. In consultation with the GGD, the patient is being asked to stay at home and avoid contact with others (self-isolate).

When hospitalization is necessary, then the patient is taken care of in insulation. This means that the patient is admitted in a separate insulation room. Healthcare providers wear special clothing, gloves, splash goggles and a face mask. They throw away these clothes after each visit to an infected patient.

Patients with weakened immune system uitklapper, klik om te openen

We understand that you worry. Even if it is not yet proven, we think that persons with weakened immune system have a slightly larger chance of a more serious course of the coronavirus. But we also think that this virus for you personally is not more harmful than other respiratory virusses like the flu. That is why it is important that you follow up to the precautions as advised by the RIVM. Because insights do change quickly, we advice to frequently have a look at the website of the RIVM.

Is there a special advise for patients with weakened immune system?

At this moment, there is no special advise to protect adults or children with weakened immune system due to organ or stem cell transplants, HIV, congenital immune disorder (PID), chemo therapy or immunosuppresive therapy. However, we do advice to keep in mind the below hygiene measures:

  • Frequently wash your hands.
  • No shaking hands.
  • Cough and sneeze into your elbow.
  • Use disposable tissues.
  • Do not shake hands.
  • Try to avoid touching your face (eyes, mouth, nose).

Can I go out for social activitiess/groceries/etc?

We advice to be careful with social activities in bigger groups and crowded public spaces in areas where spread of  the new coronavirus is determined. Also try to avoid contact with people who have respiratory complaints.

I have respiratory complaints and/or fever and a lower resistance. What should I do?

Our advice is to take action as you would with any other (respiratory)infection. If necessary, you can contact your treating physician by phone. He/she will discuss the next steps.

When I have respiratory complaints and/or fever, do I get tested immediately for coronavirus?

There is no reason to test you (soon/directly) for coronavirus. Unless you have a family member that is infected with coronavirus. In that case, the GGD will do contact research.

I have respiratory complaints and/or fever. Can I still come to my appointment/treatments?

If you have fever and/or respiratory complaints, we ask you to not come to the hospital for your appointment. First contact your polyclinic. Your appointment may be moved or replaced by a telephone consultation.

Visit day care chemo therapy or immunoglobuline suppletion

This treatment goes through. Do you have respiratory complaints and/or fever? First contact the day care.

Can I get infected with the coronavirus via blood, immunoglobulin and plasma products?

No.

Can I keep using my medication?

Yes. It is very important that you use your medication in the right way. Especially in this situation. Make sure you have medication in home.
