Biography
Karin Smit studied medicine at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and obtained her medical degree in 2016. She worked as a medical resident in internal medicine (Spital Muri, Zwitserland) and Neurology (Ziekenhuis Gelderse Vallei, the Netherlands) before she started with her GP Vocational training in 2019 in Utrecht.
In 2010 she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
Her objective was to combine research with practicing medicine as a general practitioner (in training). In September 2020 she started a “mini-aiotho” program at the Julius Center of the UMC Utrecht. She is interested in pulmonary and cardiovascular disease, as well as in (international) public health and infection prevention.
Her research is mainly focused on the CovidSat@Home study. This is a pilot RCT to investigate the feasibility of monitoring patients with or at risk for cardiovascular disease who have symptoms suspected of COVID-19 by pulse oximetry at home. This trial is mainly supervised by dr. Dorien Zwart, dr. Roderick Venekamp, prof. dr. Frans Rutten and dr. Geert-Jan Geersing.
