CMM Education
CMM Education
Education is one of the three core tasks of the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM). This education website of the CMM aims to help students find answers to their questions about the education of the CMM, to inform students, colleagues and other interested people, and to list the educational activities of the CMM.
The CMM comprises the sections Cell Biology, Molecular Cancer Research, Stem Cells, and Genetics. The CMM teaches in all medical and biomedical science curricula of the UMC Utrecht (Biomedische Wetenschappen, Graduate School of Life Sciences, CRU+, SUMMA), in postgraduate curricula (PhD programmes of the Utrecht Graduate School of Life Sciences, medical specialist training), and in extracurricular courses (Summerschool, commercial courses).
The CMM continuously adapts and improves its education to stay at the frontier of scientific and didactic developments. In the coming years, the CMM will (1) further optimize and innovate the education of biomedical researchers and physicians, (2) improve the organization of education, (3) develop career path plans for educational staff, and (4) increase visibility of its educational activities.
The CMM has always played -and will continue to play- a preeminent role in the education of biomedical researchers, due to the extensive knowledge and expertise in the fields of cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, genomics and bioinformatics and the outstanding international reputation of its research.
The figure shows the contribution of the CMM to the curriculum of “Biomedische Wetenschappen” in 2014-2015:
Scientific developments compel the CMM to increase its involvement in medical education. Knowledge of medical genetics and molecular medicine develop at an extraordinary pace. “Big data” are becoming more important every day. Therapy of diseases will vary with the genetic characteristics of the patient, the so-called “personalized medicine”. The CMM has the knowledge to teach (future) physicians how to apply the increasing knowledge in their clinical practice.
As a first step the department of Genetics will participate, as of the academic year 2016/2017, in a Longitudinal Integrated Clinical rotation (called LINK-Rood) together with the departments of Pediatrics and Gynaecology. LINK-Rood is compulsory for all medical students and the participation of Clinical Genetics in a mandatory clinical rotation is without precedent in the Dutch educational system.

The Manager Education of the CMM is Prof. B.M.T. Burgering ad interim.
All staff members of the CMM have a teaching task, but a number of staff positions is dedicated to education. The CMM has appointed a general coordinator of education and established an Education Council (EdC) that facilitates communication and exchange of educational knowledge between staff members, and counsels the Management Team (MT) of the CMM. Main goals of the Education Council are to implement the education policy of the CMM and safeguard the quality of the education of the CMM.
