The research theme 'Acute events & Hospitalization focuses on recognizing risks, identifying potential problems, and developing effective interventions to prevent or restore the negative consequences of the diseases and/or the hospital admission and to improve the competencies of nurses working in hospitals.

The main focus of this program is research into the consequences of diseases with an acute onset, such as stroke, characterized by an abrupt loss of self-reliance in daily functioning. The research is aimed to develop and evaluate interventions to restore independence in daily functioning as well as to predict and diagnose problems that hamper optimal recovery and to develop and evaluate interventions to prevent or reduce these problems.

Acute events, deterioration of chronic diseases or planned medical interventions often lead to hospital admission. Due to the hospital admission, patients have an increased risk of complications and loss of physical or cognitive function. Research aims to provide interventions for identifying risks and prevent complications.
